Revelation 5: Earning the right to open the scroll

May 31st, 2007

There are many different types of prizes and awards that you can win in life. Tennis clubs and golf clubs often have honour boards showing who has won the club championship each year since the club began. If the club has been around for a while, you can check the names of the club champions for the past 30 years to see if you can recognise anyone who went on to bigger or better things. Often the names have simply faded into obscurity, but sometimes you come across a name of a person who has moved on to fame and fortune. What can you do to win glory that lasts?

The Revelation to John — Chapter 5

5:1 I saw, in the right hand of the one who sat on the throne, a scroll with writing on both sides, sealed shut with seven seals. 5:2 I saw a powerful angel shouting with a loud voice, “Who is worthy to open the scroll, and to break its seals?” 5:3 No one in heaven, or on the earth, or under the earth, was able to open the scroll, or to look in it. 5:4 And I wept bitterly, because no one could be found who was worthy to open the scroll, or to look in it. 5:5 One of the leaders said to me, “Don’t weep. The Lion who comes from the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has prevailed. He can open the scroll and its seven seals.” 5:6 I saw a Lamb standing between the throne and the four living animals, and in front of the leaders. He looked as if he had been slain, and had seven horns, and seven eyes, which are the seven Spirits of God, sent out to all the earth. 5:7 He came and took the scroll from the right hand of the one who sat on the throne. 5:8 When he had taken the scroll, the four living animals and the twenty-four leaders fell down in front of the Lamb, each one with a harp and golden bowls full of incense, which are the prayers of the believers. 5:9 They sang a new song, “You are worthy to take the scroll and to open its seals, because you were killed, and bought us for God with your blood, from every tribe, language, people, and nation, 5:10 and made us a kingdom and priests to our God, and we will reign on earth.”

5:11 I saw and heard the sound of many angels around the throne, the living animals, and the leaders; and the number of them was ten thousands of ten thousands, and thousands of thousands; 5:12 shouting with a loud voice, “Worthy is the Lamb who was killed to receive the power, wealth, wisdom, strength, honour, glory, and blessing!”

5:13 I heard every created thing which is in heaven, on the earth, under the earth, and in the sea, all of them, saying, “To the one who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb be blessing, honour, glory, and power, forevermore! Amen!” 5:14 The four living animals said, “Amen!” and the leaders fell down and worshipped.
