Revelation 6: The bad news behind the seals

June 1st, 2007

Bad things happen to good people. Bad things happen to bad people as well. Whether you’re good or bad, you get to experience some happiness in life, but everyone gets to experience death, and everyone gets to experience grief and loss and unhappiness. Philosophers have argued for centuries about why bad things happen to good people, but it seems to me that bad things just happen, and you have to get over it. The question is, do bad things come from God, and could or should God be doing something to prevent them from happening?

The Revelation to John — Chapter 6

6:1 I watched when the Lamb opened one of the seven seals, and I heard one of the four living animals saying, with a voice like thunder, “Come and see!” 6:2 I looked, and there was a white horse, and its rider had a bow. A crown was given to him, and he went out as a conqueror to conquer people.

6:3 When the Lamb opened the second seal, I heard the second living animal saying, “Come!” 6:4 Another horse came, a red one. Its rider was given power to take away peace from the earth, so that people would kill each other. He was given a huge sword.

6:5 When the Lamb opened the third seal, I heard the third living animal saying, “Come and see!” I looked, and there was a black horse, and its rider had a pair of scales in his hand. 6:6 I heard a voice from the direction of the four living animals saying, “A litre of wheat for a day’s pay, and three litres of barley for a day’s pay! Don’t ruin the oil and the wine!”

6:7 When the Lamb opened the fourth seal, I heard the fourth living animal saying, “Come and see!” 6:8 I looked, and there was a pale green horse, and its rider’s name was Death. Hades followed with him. He was given authority over one fourth of the earth, to kill with the sword, famine, disease, and wild animals of the earth.

6:9 When the Lamb opened the fifth seal, I saw underneath the altar the souls of those who had been killed for preaching the message of God, and for telling people about their faith. 6:10 They shouted with a loud voice, “How long, Master, holy and true, until you judge and avenge our blood on people who live on the earth?” 6:11 A long white robe was given to each of them. They were told that they should rest for a while longer, until the work of their fellow servants and fellow believers, who would be killed just as they had been, could be completed.

6:12 I watched when he opened the sixth seal, and there was a huge earthquake. The sun became as black as sackcloth made of hair, and the whole moon looked like blood. 6:13 The stars in the sky fell to the earth, like a fig tree dropping its figs when it is shaken by a great wind. 6:14 The sky was removed like a scroll being rolled up. All the mountains and islands were moved out of their places. 6:15 The kings of the earth, the statesmen, the commanders, the wealthy, the powerful, and all the slaves and free people, hid themselves in caves and behind rocks in the mountains. 6:16 They said to the mountains and rocks, “Fall on us, and hide us from the sight of the one who sits on the throne, and from the anger of the Lamb, 6:17 because the great day of their anger has come, and who can survive?”
