When you want to learn something, you do some research, find out who is a good teacher, and enrol to learn from that teacher. The best teachers are the ones who attract the most students. But what if things happened the other way round? What if the greatest and most admired teacher around came up to you and told you that you had been selected to be a student? How would you feel and what would you do if the President of America contacted you and asked you to become a highly paid adviser? What if the King of Kings and the God of all the Universe contacted you and told you that you had been chosen to be his beloved son or daughter?
John’s Account of the Good News — Chapter 15
15:1 Jesus continued, “I am the true vine, and my Father is the farmer. 15:2 He takes away every branch in me that doesn’t produce fruit. He prunes every branch that does produce fruit, so that it can produce more fruit. 15:3 You are already pruned clean because of the message which I have spoken to you. 15:4 Stay in me, and I will stay in you. Just as the branch can’t produce fruit by itself unless it stays on the vine, neither can you, unless you stay in me. 15:5 I am the vine. You are the branches. Those who stay in me, and I in them, produce a lot of fruit, but apart from me you can do nothing. 15:6 People who don’t stay in me are thrown out and shrivel up like a branch. They are gathered up and thrown into the fire, and they are burned. 15:7 If you stay in me, and my message stays in you, you will ask anything you want and it will be done for you.
15:8 “My Father is glorified when you produce a lot of fruit, and so you will be my disciples. 15:9 Just as the Father has loved me, I also have loved you. Stay in my love. 15:10 If you keep my commandments, you will stay in my love; just as I have kept my Father’s commandments, and stay in his love. 15:11 I have told you these things so that my joy can stay in you, and so that you can be filled with joy.
15:12 “This is my commandment, that you love each other, just as I have loved you. 15:13 No one has greater love than someone who gives up his life for his friends. 15:14 You are my friends if you do what I command you. 15:15 I no longer call you servants, because the servant doesn’t know what the master does. But I have called you friends, because I have made known to you everything that I heard from my Father. 15:16 You didn’t choose me, but I chose you, and appointed you to go and produce fruit, and your fruit should last, so that the Father will give you whatever you ask from him in my name.
15:17 “I command you to love each other. 15:18 If the world hates you, you know that it has hated me before it hated you. 15:19 If you belonged to the world, the world would love its own. But because you do not belong to the world, since I chose you out of the world, the world hates you. 15:20 Remember the message which I told you: ‘A servant is not greater than a master.’ If they persecuted me, they will also persecute you. If they kept my word, they will keep yours also. 15:21 But they will do all these things to you because of me, because they don’t know the one who sent me. 15:22 If I had not come and spoken to them, they would not have sinned, but now they have no excuse for their sin. 15:23 Someone who hates me also hates my Father. 15:24 If I hadn’t done among them miracles which no one else did, they wouldn’t have sinned. But now have they seen and also hated both me and my Father. 15:25 This has happened so that the prediction written in their law may be fulfilled, ‘They hated me without reason.’
15:26 “When the Counsellor comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth, who comes from the Father, he will tell you about me. 15:27 You will also tell people about me, because you have been with me from the beginning.”
